Sangeh Monkey Forest

Sangeh Monkey Forest, a tourist attraction with shady forests and inhabited by roaming monkeys.

It is located not far from Pura Taman Ayun, a temple surrounded by ponds and flower gardens.

If you are on holiday in Bali, it is incomplete to visit Bali without visiting here with hundreds of long-tailed monkeys in Sangeh.

Bukit Sari Sangeh Monkey Forest is a nutmeg forest that is hundreds of years old. Sangeh comes from the words "sang" meaning human and "ngeh" meaning to see, because it is said that according to the hikayat, the nutmeg trees were on a holy journey from Mount Agung to the west but because they were caught by human eyes, the journey stopped at Sangeh.

In the middle of the forest are several temples built by the Mengwi court in the 17th century with Pura Bukit Sari as the centerpiece. The monkeys are believed to be the incarnation of Hanoman warriors guarding Pura Bukit Sari.

Therefore, no local people dare to disturb their lives. In the past, Sangeh monkeys were known to be ferocious, so nowadays they have become more docile. These gray-haired monkeys are not afraid of humans and even like to come closer to take selfies and ask for food.

And also, according to local residents, the uniqueness of the monkeys inhabiting this Sangeh tourist attraction is that they are divided into 3 groups, and each group has 1 leader. And there is one supreme leader of the three groups.

Another uniqueness of the monkeys in the Sangeh forest is that if a monkey dies due to illness or old age, the other monkey friends will bury the dead body themselves, and there is a special place for the monkeys to bury the dead body.

Besides the nutmeg tree, there is another famous plant in the Sangeh forest. The local people call it the Lanang Wadon Tree, because the bottom of the tree has a hole that resembles a woman's genitals, while in the center of the hole grows a downward-facing trunk that resembles a man's genitals. The tree that grows right in the front yard of the Sangeh tourist spot is actually a pule tree.

This tree, called Lanang Wadon, has a very unique belief. If you pray at Lanang Wadon, for those of you young couples who often quarrel can be given a harmonious relationship, and for a married couple who do not have offspring, if you pray at this Lanang Wadon tree, your prayers will definitely be answered and soon have offspring.

And enjoy your exciting vacation in Bali.
